Fundamentals & Benefits

  1. What does AFK stand for in Caravanning?

AFK is short for Anti-Flap Kit.

  1. What is an Anti-Flap Kit, and what are its main benefits?

An Anti-Flap Kit is a device that rigidly attaches to the edges of a caravan’s roll-out awning fabric, preventing it from flapping in the wind. They significantly improve stability, reduce noise, protect the awning fabric from damage, and feature built-in sail tracks for attaching annexes, walls, or privacy screens.

  1. How does an AFK improve our camping experience?

AFK’s transform your awning into a stable, secure roof. They drastically reduce distracting wind noise, prevent tearing and stress on the fabric, and provide a secure, weatherproof track to easily attach annexe walls, creating a large, functional outdoor living space.

  1. How much wind can a caravan awning with an AFK handle?

An AFK dramatically increases stability and resistance to wind lift. However, you must always retract your awning during severe weather conditions, such as strong gales, storms, or torrential rain, as the AFK is a stability aid, not a storm guard.

Compatibility & Sizing

  1. Can I use an Anti-Flap Kit on any awning?
  • There are multiple anti-flap kits that are designed to cover a range of different awnings. Always verify compatibility and check the required size for your specific awning model.

  1. Anti-Flap Kit for Pop-Top caravan?
  • Absolutely, yes. Campsmart Anti-Flap Kits are widely used on Pop-Top caravans (like Jayco Swan, Starcraft, Expanda). They provide the same great stability and annexe-attachment functionality. Pop-Tops generally require the Short or Medium AFK sizes due to their lower profile.
  •
  1. Is the AFK installation different on a Pop-Top?

No. A properly installed AFK sits along the edge of the awning fabric and connects directly to the awning roller tube and the caravan wall, without interfering with the lifting arms or mechanism of the Pop-Top roof itself.

  1. How do I accurately measure my awning to choose the right AFK size?

Fully extend your awning and measure the projection—the horizontal distance from the roller tube back to the caravan wall. This measurement determines the required length (Short, Medium, or Long) of the AFK's curved sections

  1. Do I need special curved Anti-Flap Kits for a curved awning roof?

No. Our AFKs are designed with a gentle curve to follow the natural bow of the awning. The rigid AFK frame actually helps tension the fabric flatter, reducing curvature and assisting with water run-off.

Installation & Tools

  1. Are Anti-Flap kits easy to install? (Initial Setup vs. Daily Use)

The daily use is very quick and easy—it just clamps onto the fabric. The initial installation (affixing wall brackets and drilling a small hole into the roller tube) is a popular DIY project but requires careful measurement and drilling. We provide detailed guides, and the key is to measure twice and drill once.

  1. What tools are needed to install Anti-Flap kits to a roll out awning?

The installation only requires basic tools:

  • Drill: For securing wall brackets and drilling the roller tube.
  • Drill Bit: A 10mm (3/8") bit for the roller tube hole.
  • Measuring Tape & Marker: For accurate alignment.
  • Screwdriver/Hex Key: For tightening bracket screws.
  • Crucial Tip: Always use silicone sealant around the screws and drill
  • hole locations on the caravan wall for a waterproof seal.
  •
  1. What tools are needed to install anti flap kits to a Fiamma awning

The good news is that no drilling into the caravan wall is required for Fiamma AFK installations. The process involves assembling the AFK and securing special brackets inside the awning’s cassette casing.

  • Screwdriver (Phillips Head): For tightening the small screws that secure the specialized mounting brackets inside the Fiamma cassette casing.
  • Large Flat-Head Screwdriver or Similar Tool (Optional but Recommended): The plastic brackets that fit inside the Fiamma casing are designed to be a very tight, secure fit. You may need a flat-head screwdriver or a similar flat, blunt tool to help apply the force required to "snap" the bracket past the internal ridge and into its final, secure position.
  • No Drilling into the Caravan: The AFK is secured to the Fiamma casing itself via proprietary brackets and uses adaptors for the lead bar/outrigger legs. This is the main difference from a traditional roll-out awning installation.
  • Bracket Force is Normal: Do not be alarmed if the initial fitting of the internal mounting brackets requires force to clip into the cassette casing. This tight fit is essential for the system's stability and is considered normal by the manufacturers
  1. Is the initial setup and daily use of an Anti-Flap Kit easy for a DIY caravanner?

Yes. While the one-time initial setup requires careful DIY work (measurement and drilling), the daily setup involves simply sliding the AFK sections together, lifting them onto the fabric, inserting the pin, and closing the quick-lock clamps—a process that takes most experienced caravanners under 5 minutes.

Comparison & Alternatives

  1. What is the difference between a 'De-Flapper Clamp' and a full Anti-Flap Kit (AFK)?

De-Flapper Clamps are simple, temporary, strap-based clamps that reduce noise, often used for short overnight stays. A full, rigid Anti-Flap Kit is a permanent aluminium frame that provides maximum stability, permanently mounts to the wall, and includes the critical sail track required to attach annex walls and privacy end wall screens.

  1. Why should I choose a full Anti-Flap Kit over just using awning tie-down straps?

They perform different jobs. Tie-down straps secure the awning to the ground, preventing lift. An AFK rigidly clamps the fabric edge to the roller tube and the caravan wall, preventing flap and horizontal movement. They should be used together for maximum stability.

  1. Do I need a separate awning tensioning device, or is the AFK enough?

The AFK tensions the side edges excellently. However, many caravanners pair the AFK with a central curved roof rafter to support the middle of the awning, which further prevents fabric sag and water pooling during rain.

  1. What are the key differences between the Campsmart Premium AFK and the Aussie Traveller AFK PRO+?

  • AFK PRO+: 20% lighter, one-size-fits-all for most awnings (2100mm-2500mm projection), features a triple sail track for multiple accessories and 3 bars per side for installation.
  • Campsmart Premium: heavier-duty, Australian-sized sail tracks, uses 2 bars per side of the awning for maximum stability and coverage.

  1. How do I choose the right AFK for my needs?
  • Check your Awning Brand: Fiamma requires a special adapter kit or system that will provide multiple different attachments
  • Measure Projection: Match your awning projection to the AFK size (Short/Medium/Long).
  • Sail Tracks: If you plan on adding multiple walls/accessories, choose a kit with a triple sail track.

Maintenance & Usage

  1. Can I leave the Anti-Flap Kit on my awning when packing up?

No, never. You must always remove the AFK before retracting (rolling up) your awning. The rigid aluminium clamps will severely damage the fabric and the roller tube if you attempt to roll them up with the awning.

  1. Can I use an AFK to attach a heavy canvas annexe wall, or are they only for light privacy screens?

Yes. The rigidity and strength of the AFK's sail track are specifically designed to handle the weight and tension of a full canvas annex wall, making them ideal for creating secure, weather-resistant annexes.

  1. Will an Anti-Flap Kit scratch or damage my awning fabric over time?

Reputable AFKs use large, cushioned, or rubberised gripping surfaces on the clamp jaw to distribute pressure and avoid pinching or tearing the fabric. Proper setup (not overtightening) is key to preventing any damage.

  1. What kind of maintenance is required for my Anti-Flap Kit?

Maintenance is minimal. Keep the aluminium frame clean, and ensure the quick-lock clamp mechanism and adjustment knobs are free of dirt and sand for smooth daily operation. Periodically check the wall bracket mounting screws for tightness.

  1. Can I buy spare parts for the Anti-Flap Kit, such as new end attachments or clamps?

Yes, parts like plastic end attachments, wall brackets, and sometimes even the clamp knobs are available for replacement, extending the useful life of the product.

  1. Do I need to check the thickness of my awning fabric before buying an AFK?

While most AFKs are highly adjustable and will work with standard vinyl or acrylic caravan awning fabrics, extremely thick or custom fabrics might be a concern. Campsmart AFKs are designed to accommodate standard material thicknesses.

  1. Are AFKs sold as a pair, or do I need to buy two for my awning?

Anti-Flap Kits are almost always sold as a pair (one for each side of the awning) to ensure balanced stability and coverage.

  1. How does the AFK handle heavy rain or water pooling on the awning?

The AFK's rigid frame tensions the side edges, which significantly reduces sag and encourages water runoff. However, to prevent water pooling in the middle during heavy rain, it is strongly recommended to pair the AFK with a central curved roof rafter.

  1. Can I convert my roll-out Anti-Flap kit into a Fiamma anti-flap kit

Sure can! Campsmart sells conversion packs that will convert your existing roll-out anti-flap kit to a Fiamma anti-flap kit, as long as the projection of the previous roll-out awning anti-flap kit is compatible with the new Fiamma anti-flap kit

  1. How do I store an Anti-Flap kit when travelling

The two best and most popular methods for storing an Anti-Flap Kit (AFK) are using a dedicated storage bag or a caravan pole carrier. We strongly recommend a dedicated storage bag for maximum protection.
